Description
Vasoactive Intestinal Peptide (VIP) is a 28–amino acid neuropeptide belonging to the secretin/glucagon peptide family. It is widely distributed throughout the central and peripheral nervous systems, as well as in immune cells and the gastrointestinal tract.
VIP primarily acts through VPAC1 and VPAC2 receptors, where it functions as a potent vasodilator and smooth muscle relaxant. It plays a significant role in regulating intestinal secretion, bronchodilation, circadian rhythm signaling, and neuroimmune modulation. In research settings, VIP has been studied for its anti-inflammatory properties, ability to modulate cytokine activity, and potential involvement in conditions related to pulmonary function, gastrointestinal disorders, and immune dysregulation.
Due to its broad receptor activity and systemic effects, VIP is often investigated in models involving inflammation, neurological signaling, and vascular tone regulation.
